Pulp’s front man Jarvis Cocker came up with the idea for V Fest in 1996. Initially a concept, he announced he would love to play two outdoor venues in two days. Promoters of the band put together the gig in Victoria Park Warrington and Hylands Park Chelmsford, allowing fans in the North and South an equal chance to see the band. More bands joined the bill so they put on a second stage and allowed camping for the weekend. The event was named V96 with the assumption the festival would take the name of the current year. It became so big they decided to arrange 1 day of acts in Victoria Park and Hylands Park had 2 days with camping.

Over the years V Festival has evolved in location, size and audience. In 1997, the northern site was moved to Temple Newsham, Leeds to make more room for the expansion. In 1999 the northern site found it’s permanent home in Weston Park Staffordshire where it remains to this day. V Festival has been sponsored by Virgin Media for many years; the company is a sub company of the Virgin Group that was founded by Richard Branson in 1970. Last year the festival had attendance figures of 270,000 people across the combined northern and southern sites.

Mostly a rock festival, V has welcomed a banquet of different artists over the years. If you are going to V festival this year on either the northern or southern site you can expect music from Justin Bieber, Kaiser Chiefs, Example, Troye Sivan and Jess Glynne. The event will take place simultaneously on the 20th and 21st August in Hylands Park, Chelmsford and Weston Park, Staffordshire. It isn’t just about the music, The Glee Club Comedy Tent is likely to feature comedians you see on your telly on a Friday night. Last year Frankie Boyle, Seann Walsh and Russell Kane were at the tent providing the laughs. You can even enjoy the view from the top of the Ferris wheel or relax in the Virgin Media’s VIP Garden if you’re lucky enough to be chosen.
