If you’re heading to Parklife this year, you’ve probably already got an idea of which acts you really want to see. Festivals are an incredible place to discover new music though, and it’s easy to skim over some great acts when studying the line-up. Hannah Walford from music website Too Many Blogs, based in Manchester, gives us her top picks at Parklife this year that you’d be an absolute fool to miss.
Major Lazer are the hottest trio in the world right now. Having just killed it at Coachella, there’s no doubt that Diplo, Walshy Fire and Jillionaire will be one of the biggest must-see’s at Parklife ’16. We have this American electronic group to thank for revolutionary pop hits such as their 2015 release ‘Lean On’, and the three have worked with iconic acts such as Snoop Dogg and No Doubt. Definitely not one to miss.
Ivor Novello nominated Wolf Alice have been rocking the boat since they first appeared on the scene with their 2013 releases including their single ‘Bros’ and later, their Blush EP. Their unique sound and couldn’t-care-less attitude has won them a strong fan base while their pure talent has secured it. Lead-singer Ellie is renowned for her stage diving antics and the band are known to give masterclasses to the young musicians that look up to them. It’s only up from here for the Wolf.
Jamie Smith, better known as Jamie xx, is as celebrated for his solo achievements as he is for his work as part of London-based band The xx. His album In Colour was recently recognised with a Grammy nomination for ‘Best Dance/Electronic Album’ and his remixes are absolute fire. His older releases like ‘Far Nearer’ (which was named by Pitchfork as its “Best New Track” back in 2006) still have a solid place in our hearts. There is no stopping yet for this pioneering producer/DJ.
If you haven’t jumped on the Skepta bandwagon by now then maybe it’s time you got on board and realised that, thanks to Skepta and the wave of grime talents that have emerged into the public-eye over the past few years, British music has regained some of its lost authenticity. Granted, ‘Shut Down’ may not feature the most introspective of lyrics, but did you know that Skepta (whose real name is Joseph Junior Adenuga) is working closely with Drake on a new series of top boy? “Everything about it is real”, he says in a recent interview, “It’s an actual thing that actually happens, so it deserves to be on the telly.”
DJ, producer and co-founder of RAM Records, Andy C is one of the biggest names in Drum and Bass. Andrew ‘Andy’ Clarke took a genre typically shunned by the masses and made it accessible, creating melodies and basslines that nobody can help but dance to. He’s carved a spot for himself in the industry and is said to have created ‘the double drop’. If you’re ready to feel music like never before, do not miss Andy C at Parklife.
